Guide for a Healthy Pet Bird

Our health is one of the things that we spend time and effort to take care of. We eat nutritious food so we can get the nutrients that our bodies need. We perform exercises to keep ourselves fit. We also observe changes in our bodies to know if we are sick or not. Just as we need to do these things for ourselves, we also need to think of them for our pets. Here is a bird care guide that focuses on food, exercise and sickness indicators.

First, let us talk about food and nutrition. Birds can be fed with different kinds of food like seeds, fruits, vegetables and formulated foods in form of pellets. Seeds provide variety to a birds’ diet. There are different seeds to choose from. There are cereal types and oil types. Having a variety of seeds ensures that birds do not get bored with what they eat. Formulated foods provide specific nutrients needed by the birds but supplements may be added to complete whatever is missing. Fruits and vegetables are good supplements to enrich seed only diets and formulated foods diets. They contain phytonutrients that boost birds’ immune system. They also help the body’s self-healing ability.

The second part of this bird care guide is about exercise. Birds perform activities that can be considered as their exercise. Flapping their wings, whether when flying or not, is an important exercise for their wings. Some birds like canaries transfer from perches to perches. Parrots love to climb on ladders. Cockatoos swing on horizontal bars provided in their cages. Small birds enjoy playing in swings hanging in their cages. It is therefore important that there are opportunities for them to do these in their cages or in the playpens provided outside.

The last part of this bird care guide is about checking for any signs of illnesses. A pet owner must observe how active his pet is. If a bird becomes slow or less active, it could be a telltale sign that it is sick. A pet owner must also check the color and consistency of the bird droppings. Changes in color and consistency could be an indication of the bird being sick. Falling feathers could also mean there is a problem. Once any of these signs is observed, you must immediately bring the pet to your veterinarian for check up.

Your pets’ overall health is important, so it is imperative that you be sensitive to the things mentioned in this bird care guide.
