Bird Cage Sizes and Materials
We have about five bird cages in our garden at home. This is because one of my housemates loves taking care of pet birds. Initially I was wondering why he keeps cages of different sizes. I was also curious why the materials used in making some cages are different from the materials used in others. Even the accessories in each cage are different from each other. I asked my housemate about these things and he gave me this simple bird care guide.

He told me that the size of the cage must match the size of the bird that will be placed in it. Naturally, big birds require big cages. The reason for this is that the bird has to be able to fly within the cage. Short flights are enough just to let them do what they are supposed to do which is to fly. They must be able to take these flights unobstructed. Birds also have to able to flap their wings regularly.
Part of the bird care guide he told me is that materials used in making the cage should suit the needs of the birds to be housed there. Metal bars are used for birds that chew a lot. Materials made of wood are not good for these birds. Also, mesh used in making the sides of the cage must not have holes too big for the bird to stick its head out.
Sizes of accessories like perches and swings also differ according to the kind of bird that will use them. Birds, like humans, have to exercise too, thus the size of perches that they will use must be able to allow them to do so. Small birds, for example, will not be able to exercise with perches with big diameters.
What my housemate gave me is just a simple bird care guide. There are still many things that have to be considered to properly take care of pet birds but these are enough to start off right.
